U is for Urban Landscape #AtoZChallenge

Okay. This was actually one of the last assignments in the Betty Edwards “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” Workbook, which really helped me as I was first learning to draw. Like I said yesterday, I have trouble getting overwhelmed by detail in any kind of landscape, but I do think there’s some interesting stuff here…

This was of a parking lot across the street from where I live, in the early morning with the shadows stretching long.

(This photo for comparison was taken more than a week later, so some details like cars have changed.)

Is there some place in your city you’d like to remember forever?

  1. Oh yes, there would be several…! Like… a view onto the river from a park bench, with a particular willow’s branches swaying softly above the water, and a particular art nouveau villa right next to it… Perhaps I should really go and try one of those places for drawing sometime soon? But you are right, urban sketching is so much harder because of the confusing flood of details!

And: most of the cars in your drawing even were in place again quite courteously! 🙂
