A figure in brown crayon

One more Betty Edwards exercise tonight. This one was copying somebody else’s picture again, an Alphonse Legros. The assignment was to work with cross-hatching with a reddish-brown crayon.

It was a little tricky figuring out how to do shading with the crayon, as it was so dark and even trying to draw a thin line with it wasn’t always easy. But I like the effect of the overall proportions and the one spot where I kinduv smudged the crayon.

Have you ever felt like the only tool you had was “black and white” to show something much more subtle?
